AHM Shafiquzzaman, director general of the Directorate of National Consumers’ Rights Protection (DNCRP), has warned that the government agency will take action if illegal stocks of onions are found anywhere in the country.
“We are gathering information about illegal onion hoarders through intelligence agencies. We will take action if illegal stock of onion is found anywhere in the country,” he said after taking part in a programme at Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) Bhaban in Dhaka on Monday.
He said some certain reasons for the rise in onion prices have been identified, but some factors remain unknown.
It is being noticed that a group is actively working to increase onion prices by reducing the supply in the market, he said, adding that the officials of the DNCRP are actively conducting drives to maintain stability in onion prices in the country.
Amid the exorbitant price of onion, the government on Sunday took an initiative to import some 52,000 tonnes of onion from India against the LCs opened earlier in a bid to curtail the price of such an essential item in the local kitchen market.
The Ministry of Commerce has already sent a letter to the Bangladesh High Commission to take the necessary action in this regard.
Besides, all the respective deputy commissioners have been asked to ensure strict monitoring in their respective areas so that onion is being sold at the kitchen market at a rational price.
The annual demand for onion in Bangladesh is around 25 lakh tonnes.
